Health and Safety Policy Design

A written Health and Safety Policy Statement is a legal requirement if a company employs 5 or more persons. A health and safety policy is a document detailing how you are going to manage health and safety issues. The policy Statement of Intent should set out your organisation's commitment to manage health and safety risks in order to meet its duties. It should also inform people in your business of their duties and the steps that they need to take in order to fulfil those duties.

We can assist you in developing your own Health and Safety Policy that is aligned to your business and ensures legal compliance.

Health and Safety Audits

A Health and Safety Audit enables your company to find out whether the objectives of the Health and Safety policy are being achieved and where improvements can be made.

We can undertake an independent systematic audit of your Health and Safety Management System to see if the original objectives are still being met and highlight areas where improvement can be made and assist in making those improvements. Premises audits can also be undertaken to ensure compliance with relevant legislation.

Risk Assessment

Every company is under a statutory duty to carry out a "suitable and sufficient" assessment of any risks present in its workplace. This duty extends not only to employees but others who could be affected by the organisations undertaking for example visitors and contractors. The assessment should be carried out by a "competent person" and examine the entire company's activities to identify any hazards involved, who may be affected, the likelihood of those hazards causing harm and the steps required minimise or control the risks.

We can help you in producing your organisation's risk assessments to ensure that they meet the statutory requirements and we can periodically review the assessments to ensure that they are still valid, again this is a statutory requirement.

Fire Risk Assessment

In October 2006, The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order (RRO) was introduced. The RRO has replaced existing fire safety legislation; fire certificates are no longer required and the emphasis is on preventing fires and reducing risk. An employer must have a suitable and sufficient fire risk assessment in place and the "Responsible Person" in the organisation must appoint one or more competent person(s) to assist them in undertaking the preventive and protective measures.

We can assist you in developing your fire risk assessment and procedures for serious or imminent danger.

Accident Investigation

Occasionally your Health and Safety Management System may fail in part with a resulting accident. It is therefore important to undertake a thorough investigation of accidents and incidents and to learn any lessons from the findings.

We will help you to identify the immediate, underlying and root causes of an accident and provide practical solutions in order to minimise a recurrence.

Retained Services

There is a legal requirement for organisations to have access to competent assistance. Every employer needs to appoint one or more "competent person(s)" to advise and assist in undertaking the necessary measures to comply with the relevant statutory requirements. If there is no relevant competent worker within the organisation then the organisation should enlist the services of an external organisation or person.

Initial Safety Services can act as the external "Competent Person" for your organisation to assist you in complying with health and safety law. There are a variety of levels of support available from telephone and email support to regular on site visits.
